imageHYDERABAD: Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah has condemned the terrorist attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar and expressed solidarity with the bereaved families of the school children.

The CM also announced 3 days of mourning in the province at the 17th annual convocation of Mehran University of Engineering and Technology in Jamshoro on Tuesday.

"We salute the armed forces for their courage and resolve to fight the menace of terrorism. We also urge all the political parties to unite for joint struggle against terrorism and to work for progress and prosperity of Pakistan," he said.

Talking about the higher education, the CM said that the Sindh government had formed the provincial Higher Education Commission (HEC), adding that a sum of Rs5 billion had been kept for the varsities for the ongoing fiscal year.

He informed that the MUET would be given Rs300 million financial grant and Rs20 million more for setting up Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Chair in the varsity. The CM expressed the hope that the MUET's position in the HEC ranking rises from the second to the first slot next year.

He appreciated the MUET's contributions saying that it had been producing quality graduates and engineers for last half century.

"The province needs more engineers and doctors to lead the way for the peoples prosperity," he said.

Shah said the way MUET had rendered its services for the development of the Thar coal project, it should work with same eagerness for development of the other energy projects.

The CM congratulated the graduates for receiving their academic degrees and express the hope that they would serve the province and Pakistan.

In his address, the MUET's vice chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Aslam Uqaili informed that the varsity had so far produced 130 PhDs while every year around 50 teachers were sent to foreign countries for higher studies on scholarship.

A total of 575 graduates were conferred degrees with 8 students decorated with 12 gold medals and 25 with the silver medals.

Mairaj Hyder, Kiran Rajput and Sara Feroze won 2 gold medals each for the top of faculty and best graduate category. Also, 8 PhDs, 95 MPhil, 360 Bachelor of Engineering, 26 Bachelor of Architecture, 26 bachelor of design, 4 Bachelor of CRP, 6 BTech Honours, 6 Btech pass and 6 BSIT degrees were given on the occasion.
