imageKARACHI: Governor of Sindh, Dr. Ishrat ul Ebad Khan has urged all Karachiites to contribute towards protection and conservation of the city's architectural heritage.

Chairing a meeting Wednesday to review measures being adopted for protection and renovation of Imperial Custom House Building (Old Custom House) and other landmarks in the vicinity, he said the area is one of the treasure troves that have to be safeguarded with passion and care.

"Equal attention has also to be paid towards needs of those working or visiting the surrounding offices and business centres alongwith occupants of residential buildings in the area," said Governor Ishrat ul Ebad Khan.

Collector Customs, Tariq Huda briefed the Governor about the Old Custom House Conservation Project that would be completed in two phases.

He mentioned that first phase of the project would be completed in four month's time against a cost of Rs. Seven million with equal care towards face lifting of the surrounding buildings of historical importance and proper plantation in the area to provide with a fresh and green affect.

The project coordinator said for the sake of protection of these buildings of architectural and historical relevance provision would be ensured for proper and designated parking lots.

In reply to a question, he said fool proof measures will also be adopted to protect these buildings against smoke emissions generated by ill tuned passing by vehicles.

The Collector of Customs said the project could succeed and retained only through close coordination among Pakistan Customs, Karachi Port Trust, KMC and city administration.

The meeting among others was also attended by Commander Karachi of Pakistan Navy (COMKAR), Vice Admiral Arifullah Hussaini, Principal Secretary, Mohammad Hussain Syed, Commissioner Karachi, Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui, KMC Administrator, Akhter Rauf Farooqui and others.
