imageKARACHI: Pakistan's pharmaceutical exports are presently over $ 800 million, annually, expected to touch $ 2000 million mark by 2018.

This was said by Member Senate Standing Committee on National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination, Senator Abdul Haseeb Khan while talking to media at Karachi Press Club here on Thursday.

He said that existing laws be strictly implemented in letter and spirit to check and eliminate manufacturing and sale of spurious and substandard drugs in the country.

He recalled that he himself is one of the creators of Drug Regulatory Authority Pakistan (DRAP), Act 2012.

The law on Drugs of 1976 was very simple, but improvement is being brought in it gradually, he added.

He said that all drugs manufacturers are requested to provide the lists of their products, so as to enlist the same, in the legislation process.

Bringing improvement in the laws enacted on drugs, is underway, and opinions of all stake holders will also be incorporated in this regard, he added.

Senator Abdul Haseeb Khan, who is also Chairman of a private pharmaceutical company, called for need to implement the law to curb drugs counterfeiting and sale and manufacturing of sub-standard drugs.

He told a questioner that unethical marketing practices are being used by different pharceutical companies in Pakistan, which is needed to be checked.

The Drug Administration is responsible to control the sale and manufacturing of substandard and spurious drugs and other irregularities, he added.

Earlier, he visited the dispensary of Karachi Press Club and pledged to coordinate with the KPC's health committee to enhance the services of the dispensary so as to provide better health facilities to KPC members.
