imageROME: Italian industrial giant Finmeccanica has said it had won a $1.2 billion (873 million euro) contract for building and operating unmanned metro lines in Lima.

The project for Metro Lines 2 and 4 in the Peruvian capital involves 35 stations, 35 kilometres of tunnels and 42 trains which will be supplied by the Italian company.

Unmanned trains similar to the ones that will be built for Lima are already being supplied by Finmeccanica to underground rail networks in Copenhagen and Riyadh.

The licensing contract from Peruvian state-owned company ProInversion sets out a five-year term for design and construction and a subsequent 30-year operating and maintenance phase.

"The project will include high performance and highly reliable components and systems with a view to maximising the complete automation of unmanned trains," Finmeccanica said in a statement.
