LARKANA: A walk for creating awareness about the polio was organised here Saturday by the District Health Department Larkana, in connection with the three-day national campaign for the eradication of the deadly disease.
The campaign starting from Monday (January 28) will end on January 30. It is aimed at creating mass awareness about the fatality of polio disease, so that the youngsters could be saved from disability.
The anti-polio walk was led by Executive District Officer Health Services Larkana Dr Abdul Fateh Bughio.
The walk was largely attended by DO Health Larkana Dr. Khalilullah Shaikh, Dr. Muhammad Panah Shaikh, representatives of WHO, UNICEF, NGOs, social workers, doctors, teachers, students, scouts and prominent citizens.
The walk started from Old DHO Office near Soekarno Memorial Tower and proceeded via Bundar Road. Marching through all the important thoroughfares of the city it concluded in front of the Press Club at Jinnah Bagh.
The participants were carrying placards and banners inscribed with slogans against polio and inviting the people to get their youngsters vaccinated to avoid polio.
The Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) will also be administered to the children upto five years of age during thre campaign.
Speaking on the occasion EDO Health Services Larkana Dr. Abdul Fateh Bughio said it is time that if we want to see our new generations healthy and educated then it will be our prime duty to eliminate Polio disease from our society in the larger interest of the nation.
He said that the purpose of the anti-polio walk was to create awareness among the people.
He appealed to the people of Larkana district to cooperate with the teams by administering anti-polio drops to their children of upto five-year age.
He urged the health authorities that not a single child should be left from administration of anti-polio drops, especially in Katcha areas and remote and rural areas of the district.
He also urged the officials of Health Department, representatives of NGOs, social workers, teachers and scouts to come forward and play their role for administration of the Oral Polio Vaccines (OPV) to the children in the district.
Speaking on the occasion, District Officer Health Larkana Dr. Khalilullah Shaikh said that the purpose of polio awareness walk was to make people aware of this worst disease.
Speaking on the occasion DO (Health Services) Dr. Muhammad Panah Shaikh said that the target had been set to vaccinate more than 283,540 children in the district and for the purpose, some 720 mobile teams had been been constituted.
The anti-polio camps will also be established at railway stations, bus stands and health centres throughout the district. The mobile teams will also visit door to door to achieve the target, he added.

District Manager PPHI Larkana and Director Education Larkana also spoke on the occasion.
