ISLAMABAD: Confirmed coronavirus cases in Pakistan on Friday crossed 90,000 mark, while death tally from the virus reached 1,879, official data said. According to the data released by the National Command and Operation Centre, Pakistan so far, has conducted 638,323 Covid-19 tests, of which 90,648 have returned positive, so far 31,200 people have recovered, and 56,213 cases are active. Punjab's Primary and Secondary Healthcare Department has reported 2,040 new coronavirus cases, the highest single-day rise recorded by any province so far, which has taken the provincial tally to 31,144. Punjab has also reported 22 more deaths, taking the total number of fatalities to 629.

According to the department, 7,806 people have recovered from the virus, while a total of 266,959 tests have been conducted so far.

Islamabad has reported 402 new coronavirus cases during the past day, its biggest daily jump in infections since the outbreak of the disease, according to the Islamabad District Health Office.

The nationwide tally of the Covid-19 patients stands at 90,648 with 33,144 cases in Punjab, 34,889 in Sindh, 11,890 in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, 5,582 in Balochistan, 852 in Gilgit-Baltistan, 3,946 in Islamabad, and 345 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

The virus has claimed at least 1,879 lives, while about 31,198 coronavirus patients have recovered.

After the Eid holidays, the coronavirus cases in Pakistan are rapidly increasing as the country lifted its lockdown on May 9, about two weeks before the Eidul Fitr festival. Transport and most businesses have re-opened but cinemas, theatres and schools remain closed.

According to health professionals, the Government of Pakistan has unofficially adopted "herd immunity" concept to cope with the Covid-19.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-led federal government from day one of the coronavirus outbreak in the country is arguing that the populous developing nations such as Pakistan cannot afford complete lockdown, while urging the people to adopt comprehensive social distancing and other measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus to avoid economic ruin.

Some officials have suggested "herd immunity" could contain the virus, a situation where enough people in a population have developed immunity to an infection to be able to effectively stop that disease from spreading. However, the World Health Organization has warned countries that have "lax measures" in place against counting on "herd immunity" to halt the spread of the Covid-19.
