With an aim to control and ensure swift recovery of stolen cellphones, the city police in collaboration with the Punjab Information and Technology Board (PITB) on Wednesday launched a mobile-based application "E-GADGET" for traders through which they will register the IMEI numbers of every customer. The launching ceremony of the app was held at the office of DIG Investigation on Wednesday. Besides other senior officers, Capital City Police Officer Lahore BA Nasir Khan, DIG Investigation Dr Inam Waheed, DIG Operations Waqas Nazir, SSP Admin Muntazir Mehdi, SSP Investigation Zeeshan Asghar and SSP CRO Ahsan Saifullah were also present.
Speaking on the occasion, the CCPO said the app is user friendly and would be compatible for both the android and iOS software. Through this, the traders would trace the stolen cellphones by entering required IMEI numbers. Also, they would have to enter the IMEI numbers of their visiting customers. This is a pilot project which will be replicated after its successful results, he added.
DIG Investigation Dr Inam said that the sellers, buyers and the software experts should also enter the IMEI numbers of their customers so that the police officials could trace stolen phones. He added that a reliable date of stolen phones will be maintained by following this practice.
He claimed that once the IMEI numbers of the stolen phones are uploaded, the culprits would not be able to use them even after changing the software. A picture of the buyer and seller will also be maintained in the application, he added.
