 KARACHI: Eradication of polio from Karachi is critical for on-going efforts to help country rid of the crippling disease, said city commissioner Muhammad Sualeh Ahmad Farooqui here on Tuesday.

Discussing with the head of World Health Organization (WHO)'s technical advisory group for polio eradication in Pakistan, Dr.Jean Marc O'live, measures adopted for protection of children, he said a comprehensive strategy has been adopted to eliminate polio virus from the local environs.

"The effort is being accorded top priority and the government is confident that the efforts will help country get included, soon, on the list of polio free countries," he said.

WHO country head to Pakistan, Dr.Abdirehman, national technical focal person, Dr. Altaf Bosan, technical focalperson for Sindh, Ahmed Ali Shaikh and Dr. Nusrat Ali, coordinator, commissioner office's task for polio control were also present on the occasion.

The WHO official, who had earlier taken a round of the metropolis to review the on-going vaccination against polio campaign, talking to the Karachi commissioner expressed satisfaction regarding the efforts.

Farooqui apprised the WHO officials about measures adopted to cover the children left out during the campaign and the stringent combing approach adopted to trace the kids denied of the vaccines by their parents or due to any other reason.

Karachi commissioner mentioned that divisional committees headed by their respective deputy commissioner have been working since long to address the issue of denial and that sincerity of purpose has markedly addressed the issue.

He mentioned that community as well as prayer leaders, schools teachers and administration and opinion makers have been taken on board to address misgivings about the exercise among the people in general.
