The provincial government is taking steps to make Lahore as 'Friendly City for Special Children' and formal announcement in this regard is expected soon.
Sources in the social welfare department Punjab told Business Recorder here on Monday that necessary steps are underway, to declare the Lahore City as 'Friendly City for Special Children' and as soon as maximum practical support and facilities are ensured, formal announcement would be made.
The government has already taken several measures for the wellbeing of special children while more steps are underway.
The government is considering helping all those NGOs working for the uplift of special children, while special focus will be paid on the education of special children.
In this regard, the government has decided to provide computer education to special children and specially designed computers will be provided to those institutes extending educational facilities to them, the sources said.
According to them, the government has decided to provide official support to all those institutions engaged in provision of education to special children, while those who needs financial help may also be provided support.
Steps are also being taken for their rehabilitation on permanent basis.
The sources also claimed that the government has decided to promote sports activities among special children and in this regard, games for special children will be held on regular basis.
Moreover, the sources said that the government has planned to establish 'children houses' in the big cities for orphan children.
In the proposed houses, the orphan children will be provided proper educational and medical facilities so that they could become useful citizens.
The proposed houses will go a long way in checking the menace of beggary.
The provincial social welfare department is also working on a proposal regarding setting up asylums in all the districts of the province so as to provide safe places to helpless, needy and deserving women.
The department is also contemplating to introduce various programmes for poverty alleviation in the province, the sources said.
