imageISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Planning, Development and Reforms was informed on Thursday that two Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) based power projects would start supplying 1200 MW electricity to national grid in next year.

Briefing the committee held here at Parliament House under Chairmanship of Col (Retd) Syed Tahir Hussain Mashhadi, a senior official of the Ministry of Water and Power said that the total capacity of the power projects being installed at Baloki and Haveli, Bhadurshah have been designed to produce 1200 MW each.

However, both the project would start producing 1200 MW electricity by end of 2017.

He said 45 percent of civil work of the projects has already been completed while government has approved budget in the year 2015-16.

He further informed the committee that 28,000 agriculture tubewells in Balochistan province are being provided electricity on subsidized rates.

He said that as many as 140 solar tubewell pumps are being installed to meet irrigation requirement of Balochistan province.

He said that Gawadar city would be provided upto 100 MW this year adding, negotiation are in final stage with Iranian government.

Regarding resettlement of affectees of Mangla Dam raising project, he said Rs.4 billion are required for this purpose.

Responding to a question raised by a member of the committee, he said de-silting of Mangla dame is not possible at this stage.

Giving details of water projects, he said Darawat dam in Jamshoro district would be completed by June 30, this year for which 98.15 percent physical work of the project has been completed.

He said Satpara dam would be completed next year to provide 17 MW electricity to Skardu.

The official said that Rainee canal has physically been completed while 87.16 percent physical work of Kachhi canal Phase II has been completed, adding, the revised cost of the project is Rs.102.07 billion.

Once completed, this canal would irrigate 110,000 acres land in Balochistan province.

The committee also adopted a report of the Sub-Committee under the convenorship of Senator Karim Ahmed Khawja to find all possible solutions and frame recommendations to control erosion of Coastal Areas of Sindh and Balochistan due to Sea intrusion.

The report would be submitted to the Upper House of the Parliament while its copy would be sent to Ministry of Planning, Development and Reforms to incorporate in the Vision 2025 initiative.
