imageThe death toll in Karachi has risen to 250 as exceptionally intense heat wave continued to torture people of Sindh. Temperature soared to 44 degrees Celsius (111 Fahrenheit) on Saturday and hovered at 43 degrees Celsius (109 Fahrenheit) on Sunday as people observed Ramadan.

The risk of getting heat stroke is much higher in this hot weather plus the Ramadan fasting in the day time. Heat stroke occurs when a person becomes dehydrated and their body temperature rises above 40.5 degrees Celsius. This is a medical emergency and can lead to death.

Here are few precautions to take to prevent yourself from the heat stroke.

· Limit the amount of time you spend outdoors.

· Avoid tea, coffee and cigarettes which can increase dehydration.

· Wear hat and full sleeves clothes when outdoors.

· Avoid hectic work schedule. Reduce physical activities and hectic exercise.

· Wear loose clothing light in color and fabric.

· During the hottest hours of the day, keep children indoors in an air-conditioned environment as much as possible. Families without air conditioning should pull shades over the windows and use room fans.

· Consider replacing metal blinds or dark curtains because they absorb heat.

· Turn off non-essential lights and electrical equipment because they generate heat.

· Placing bowls of water around your house will also help cool the air through evaporation.

· Avoid drinking extremely cold liquids immediately after fasting as they can cause stomach cramps.

· Keep yourself hydrated after breaking fast. Drink plenty of water.
