SAO PAULO: Thousands of homeless Brazilians protested in Sao Paulo on Tuesday to demand laws legalizing their land occupations, returning to the streets during the World Cup.
The Homeless Workers Movement occupied the streets in front of the business hub's city council and said they would not budge until local lawmakers meet their demands.
Some brought tents and strung canopies to the council building and put down mattresses to spend the night.
Organizers said at least 5,000 people participated in the protest.
The movement had announced two days before the World Cup started in Brazil on June 12 that it would not hold protests during the tournament after reaching a deal that includes construction of new social housing.
