KARACHI: Around 16,000 young women died of pregnancy and childbirth-related complications every year in the country and most of these death are due to excessive blood loss after child birth.
These views were expressed by President National Committee for Maternal and Neonatal Health (NCMNH) Prof Sadiqua N. Jafarey.
She was addressing a seminar of NCMNH in collaboration with the Midwifery Association of Pakistan (MAP) and the Association for Mothers and Newborns (AMAN) on "Reducing Maternal Deaths" at Karachi Press Club, said a statement on Sunday.
Prof Sadiqua Jafarey informed that maternal mortality ratio in Pakistan is 276, per 100,000 live birth, which is the highest in South Asia.
She further informed that a woman dies due to pregnancy, every 30 minutes.
She said most common cause of maternal deaths is excessive blood loss after childbirth, abortion-related complication are among the five major causes of maternal deaths.
Gynecologist Dr Sadiah Ahsan Pal urged the doctors and midwives attending childbirth to carry the tablets at all time to save lives of their patients.
Secretary General MAP Mehmooda Afroze said majority of these maternal death are preventable through proper use of life saving medications.
