ISLAMABAD: The wedding season is about to start with the advent of Spring and abnormal increase in the prices of gold ornaments have made it difficult for the parents to get their children marry in befitting manner.

Marriages without gold jewellery have became a social taboo in the country where majority of the people take loans to manage wedding expenditures being afraid of what others will say.

People want to observe each and every ritual of the marriage to satisfy their emotions and compete their other relatives by spending more and more contrary to the religious teachings of living life with simplicity and moderation.

The surge in the prices of gold accessories which are termed as an integral part of any wedding has affected the gold business and led to a reversion to buying of artificial jewellery.

Talking to APP, Irfan Saeed who runs a jewellery shop said the extraordinary rise in the price of gold during last few years restrained people from purchasing gold jewellery for weddings.

The gold price has risen upto Rs 42,900 per Tola and Rs 36,780 for 10 grams gold which is not affordable for the people belonging to the lower middle and salaried class, he said.

Normally, people cannot manage to buy gold jewellery and they are forced to opt for artificial things to just keep face.

The gold business has slowed down this year too as the surging prices with each passing day have limited the purchasing capacity of people, Irfan said.

Purchasing gold has become a nightmare for especially the poor classes living in the rural areas and suburban areas of cities who live from hand to mouth.

If they try to arrange weddings by copying others, they get loans which they have to repay leading to further financial troubles.

Those who are well off have not much to worry about, as they can spend a lot and arrange weddings with pomp and show.

A household lady Saima Mushtaq said the manifold rise in the prices of essentials of marriages, especially gold has made it difficult for the low income groups to marry off their children.

Marriage is such an event which happens once in a lifetime and it is effort of every household to follow the old traditions and customs which requires a lot of monetary burden, Saima said.

The desire to get married in lavish ceremonies is infectious and everybody wants to wed their children with style and pomp but only money makes the sparkling dreams come true.

The enormous prices of eatables, garments, gold and other accessories have impacted negatively on the hustle and bustle once observed in the weddings.

Similarly, the charges of marriages halls have also increased. Most of the people manage to arrange the ceremony near their houses to avoid the expenditure of marriage halls.

Besides, beauty parlours, flower sellers and card printers also increase rates frequently.
