An accountability court granted on Friday the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) a 12-day physical remand of Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N) Vice-President Maryam Nawaz in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills (CSM) case.

A NAB team presented the PML-N vice-president and her cousin Yousuf Abbas in the court today. Advocate Amjad Pervez is representing Maryam and her cousin.

NAB prosecutor requested accountability court Judge Naeem Arshad for a 15-day physical remand of Maryam and her cousin. However, the court granted a 12-day remand till August 21, local media reported.

NAB arrested Maryam on Thursday from outside Kot Lakhpat jail where she had went to see her imprisoned father Nawaz Sharif. The accountability watchdog had summoned Maryam to fill a questionnaire in the CSM case. However, she had not appeared and went to see her father. A NAB team arrived at the jail and detained her.

ECP to announce verdict on Aug 27 over Maryam’s disqualification from party post

On July 3, Maryam appeared before the accountability watchdog to record her statement in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills reference. The statement was about ‘dubious’ business transactions of CSM of which she was one of the major shareholders.

Last year, accountability court Judge Mohammad Bashir convicted Maryam in the Avenfield case. She was sentenced to seven years jail term. However, Islamabad High Court suspended her sentence after which she was released from jail.
