BAHAWALPUR: Bahawalpur Police Thursday said they had bursted a seven-member gang involved in 44 robberies, thefts and other heinous crimes.

A spokesman for Bahawalpur police said that two of them were killed during cross firing and two others were injured while three of the seven accused managed to escape from the scene.

The notorious criminals were wanted by police in several cases and 42 First Information Reports (FIRs) had been registered against them at different police stations of the district.

He said that the police received information that seven bandits riding on two motorcycles were seen passing through the area, lying within the jurisdiction Khairpur Tamewali Police Station.

The station house officers (SHOs) of police stations Khairpur Tamewali and PS Anayati were directed to arrest the gang, who signaled the bandits to stop, but they opened indiscriminate fire at police.

Police retaliated and shot four of them. Two of the four injured succumbed to their injuries on way to the hospital, while two others were admitted to a hospital, the spokesman said.

The dead were identified as Rab Nawaz and Hanif, while the injured were recognized as Wazir and Mukhtar.

The spokesman said 13 cases of robbery, theft and other heinous crimes were lodged against Rab Nawaz at different police stations while two FIRs were registered against Hanif.

Seven FIRs of robbery, theft and other crimes were lodged against Wazir at different police stations while 20 cases were also registered against Mukhar.

The police spokesman said that Khairpur Tamewali Police had registered another FIR against the accused under Section 302/324/353/186/148149 and investigation was underway.
