NEW YORK: Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was the chief guest at a dinner hosted by the outgoing Pakistan Ambassador to the United Nations, Abdullah Hussain Haroon, to say goodbye to his counterparts from around the globe, colleagues and friends.
Speaking on the occasion, the UN chief paid tributes to Haroon, describing him as an extraordinary person who had multiple qualities, according to a press release issued by Pakistan Mission to the UN.
A popular diplomat, Ban said Haroon served Pakistan with distinction for four years, as he highlighted the ambassador's excellent speaking skills and convincing power. The secretary-general went to say that Haroon was the Pakistan's ambassador to the UN, and now -- after he returns to his country -- he will be the UN's ambassador in Pakistan.
Ambassadors of China, Bangladesh, Morocco, Palestine, Egypt, Jamaica were among those who also praised Haroon's contribution in a number of areas, saying his services will be long remembered. In his welcoming remarks, Haroon lauded Ban's services in promoting international peace and security as also in alleviating the suffering of people hit by disasters around the world.
He recalled how quickly the secretary-general responded when Pakistan was was hit was worst-ever floods in 2010 that uprooted 20 million people. Ban, he said, air dashed to Pakistan to be with the victims if the flood and ensuring they received relief materials. Haroon also thanked the secretary-general for his cooperation and guidance, saying he learned a lot from him.
