LOS ANGELES: A photographer who allegedly pursued teen pop star Justin Bieber in a high-speed car chase along an LA freeway was charged Wednesday with reckless driving in a landmark legal case.
It was the first time California had used a law passed in 2010 to try to discourage paparazzi from taking unreasonable risks on the road.
City Attorney Carmen Trutanich said his office had filed criminal charges against 30-year-old Paul Raef for his involvement in the freeway chase as he desperately sought pictures of the teenage heartthrob.
Raef faces two counts of following another vehicle too closely and reckless driving while trying to capture pictures for commercial gain, another count of reckless driving, and a fourth count of failing to obey a peace officer, a statement said.
If found guilty, he could face up to a year in prison and a $3,500 fine.
On July 6, 18-year-old Bieber received a ticket for speeding, apparently as he tried to flee from paparazzi.
