There are several vaccines in the pipeline to treat coronavirus or Covid-19. I happen to watch a TV programme on Thursday, the 26th of March 2020. One of the guests in this programme was a well-known hematologist. In this programme, he was talking about using the plasma from the patients who have already recovered from Coronavirus. If we see this option, it must be time taking and dependent on the number of patients that have already recovered. On the other hand, when we talk about actual vaccine, we all know that it needs clinical trials and lengthy procedures until it can be approved by FDA for safe use by the public.
Out of the several drugs that are in the pipeline, let's not forget the term "Compassionate Treatment". It means it can be definitely used in severely sick patients when there are no other treatments available. The two drugs Choloroquine and Remdesivir can be used as compassionate treatment. However, there has been a news that a couple in the US died while using Choloroquine as a treatment of Coronavirus. Also, there has been news of three men who experienced the toxicities of Choloroquine. However, the drug Remdesivir is said to be promising. To start with, Remdesivir was developed by US Pharma Giant "Gilead Sciences Inc". I read an article that Remdesivir was used on a man in Snohomish County, Washington in the US and the patient's worsened condition got improved. One more case report of New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) stated about a California patient who the doctors thought would not survive but recovered the next day of receiving Remdesivir.
I request the health experts and research institutes to please look into the suitability and efficacy of Remdesivir as the global death rate is rising everyday.
