  • The 4-year-old Malayan tiger Nadia was tested for the coronavirus after developing a dry cough.

A tiger at the Bronx Zoo in New York City has tested positive for coronavirus which is believed to be the first known case of an animal infected by a human with the deadly virus.

The 4-year-old Malayan tiger Nadia's test results were confirmed by the National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Iowa, the zoo said. "This is the first time that any of us know of anywhere in the world that a person infected the animal and the animal got sick," Paul Calle, the chief veterinarian at the zoo said.

The tiger was tested for the coronavirus after developing a dry cough. Nadia's sister Azul, two Amur tigers, and three African lions also developed a dry cough and all are expected to recover, the Wildlife Conservation Society said, international media reported.
