The Sindh government, owing to the ongoing partial lockdown in the province, has decided to distribute 2,000,000 bags of food items among the poor segment of society all over the province.
Each bag would contain a quantity of food that is enough for a month.
This decision was taken at a high-level meeting under Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah here at the CM House on Thursday.
The meeting was attended by the Corps Commander Karachi Lieutenant-General Humayun Aziz, DG Rangers Major-General Omar Bukhari and Brigadier Sami of Corps 5.
The chief minister was assisted by provincial ministers Dr Azra Pechuho and Saeed Ghani; Advisor Law Murtaza Wahab, Secretary Mumtaz Shah, IG Sindh Mushtaq Maher, PSCM Sajid Jamal Abro and Focal Person MB Dharejo.
The chief minister briefed the meeting about the measures he had adopted to contain the spread of the coronavirus.
"With the closure of malls and restaurants - what is being termed as a partial lockdown - we have tried to slow down the spread so that necessary arrangements for establishing isolation centers and field hospitals could be made accordingly," he said.
Corps Commander Karachi Lieutenant-General Humayun Aziz appreciated the timely efforts of the provincial government and emphasized the need of providing rations to the daily wagers and the poor people so that their food requirements are met.
The chief minister said that he had held a number of meetings with the philanthropists, the Edhi centre and Saylani Welfare Trust and others to seek their help and guidance for preparation of the ration bags and development of a mechanism to provide those bags to the needy and deserving people.
The chief minister and the corps commander decided to constitute a committee under Minister of Labour Saeed Ghani with Commissioner Karachi and Additional Secretary Health Aleem Lashari and Corps-5 Brigadier Sami and his two team members to be in the committee.
The committee would decide the mechanism for the distribution of food rations.
A warehouse to store ration bags would be established from where those bags would be supplied all over Sindh.
It was also decided that each house receiving the ration bags would be marked as "supplied" so that duplication could be avoided.
It was also decided that a helpline would be set up where deserving people would get themselves registered for ration bags and then after necessary verification the bags would be supplied to them.
Expo Center: The meeting also decided that a 10,000-bed isolation facility and field hospital would be established at the Expo Center with the support of Corps 5.
Commissioner Karachi would coordinate with the Pakistan Army for the purpose.
In the first phase one hall of the Expo Center would be converted into an isolation ward and then more halls would be acquired.
