ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) had carried out a vigorous countrywide campaign in provinces against airing of illegal Indian content and usage of unlawful equipment by cable operators.

During the recent raids across the country, the PEMRA teams confiscated hundred of receivers, computers and other equipment that were being used for showing Indian content by the operators, said a press release.

Chairman Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) Muhammad Saleem Baig Monday said the authority was committed to expedite a more effective drive against illegal Indian content and Indian Direct to Home (DTH).

The Chairman warned of strict legal action if the cable operators were found relaying any Indian channel in violation of the PEMRA rules.

Giving details, PEMRA took action in the Lahore Region and confiscated several devices, transmitters and DTH from different cable network providers including  Malik Cable Network, Sammar Cable Network, New Star Cable Network and others. All the equipments had been confiscated after issuing of repeated warnings to the operators.

Similarly in Sheikupura illegal gadgets were seized by the PEMRA teams from Sunny Cable Network, DCN Cable Network. During raids in Sargodha, 41 receivers and accessories of Malik Cable Network, Dilawar Cable Network, Sky Link Cable Network, Rao Cable Network and Jawad Cable Network were confiscated.

In Faisalabad Region, 43 satellite receivers, three DTH, five C-Line including two computers were seized by the official of the PEMRA.

In Chiniot, PEMRA took action against Shaheen Cable Network, AR City Cable Network, Chaudhry Cable Network, Prime Cable Network and, Dreamland Cable Network.

During raid by the PEMRA teams, equipment was confiscated and action was taken against cable operators in cities of Jhang, Gojra, Narowal, Ghakkar Mandi, Sumandari, Kamalia, Jaranwala, Sialkot, Wazirabad, Hafizabad, Multan, Jahanian, Bahawalnagar, Khanewal, Shujabad, Rahim Yar Khan, Gujranwala, Gujrat and many other cities of Punjab.

PEMRA teams also took action against cable operators selling Indian content in provinces of Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

Notices were issued to the violators and they were warned that in case of further violation, heavy fines would be imposed and the licences of the operators would be revoked.

Chairman PEMRA appreciated the field staff for the timely campaign against the operators who were violating the law.

He stressed that the staff should ensure the implementation of the Supreme Court orders and action against airing of Indian content on cable network.

Saleem Baig said the Indian content was destroying the social, cultural and religious values of the country.
