ISLAMABAD: The Block-II of the Thar Coal Power Plant had started generating power of around 660 Mega Watt (MW) and the production will reach to 2000 MW by 2020.

The project would further produce electricity of 3000 to 4000 MW in next few years, said an Energy expert Basit Raza Abbasi talking to private news channel on Wednesday.

The Survey of Pakistan, he said, had identified 12 blocks in the Thar desert, out of which only two blocks started working.

He said three companies: Thar Company, Pak-China Company and Siddique and Sons were working on the project.

The project was coal based and having the capacity to produce continuously cheap electricity as compared to the Hydro, Solar or Wind power projects.

He said that friendly environment programs were on card to control the air pollution. Maximum numbers of trees were being planted to reduce it, he said.

To a query, he said that Neelam-Jehlum Hydro Power Plant project was producing around 1000 MW. The production of this project increased due to rains and snowfalls, he added.
