Automaker Kia uses 21 smartphone screens to make concept car’s dashboard

Automaker Kia has done some unique innovation in its concept electric vehicle’s dashboard by making it using 21 mobile phone displays.

At the Geneva Motor Show 2019, automobile manufacturer Kia showed of its latest Imagine all-electric concept EV, which looks like a normal one from the outside, but from the inside the car not only has a mirrored surface, but only contains an array of 21 smartphone-sized LCD screens on the dashboard.

The displays are arranged in a rippling patterns across the dash in a way that is ‘casual and coordinated’ as per Kia. “These 21 incredibly thin screens are a humorous and irreverent riposte to the ongoing competition between some automotive manufacturers to see who can produce the car with the biggest screen,” said Ralph Kluge, head of Kia’s interior design team.

The phone screens-cum-dashboard functions normally and provide information to drivers like the speedometer, climate control, music and navigation, reported Mashable.

Other than the screens, other features of the car include the ‘shockwave’ faceted design on the silk and leather seats. Also, it has a carpeted floor of the cabin, with the upper parts of the doors coated in metal threads woven together. It also features ‘floating’ center console with a mirror-like finish that frees up floor space and abundant storage via a trunk.

The Verge reported, however, Kia’s Imagine concept EV is only ‘pure concept’, as per Kluge, and does not have any sort of timeline, testing plans, or plans for a production vehicle. Yet, it could serve to be an inspiration for next generation of car designers.
