Samsung strikes back, claims Galaxy Fold is better than Huawei’s foldable phone

Hitting back at Huawei for calling Samsung's foldable smartphone design ‘not good’, Samsung has claimed that its design was better than Huawei’s.

Huawei and Samsung both released their foldable phones, Mate X and Galaxy Fold respectively. Both the phones had different designs. The Mate X folds outwards, while the Galaxy Fold folds inwards. This has caused a constant battle between the two as to whose design is better.

Samsung’s executive vice-president of R&D, Eui-suk Chung told the Australian Financial Review that Galaxy Fold’s in-folding design has many advantages over the Mate X’s out-folding form factor. He said that the Galaxy Fold’s design was the most intuitive out of all the designs they tested.

Huawei CEO believes Samsung’s foldable phone design is ‘not good’

“We have tried so many different things… In the end we really wanted to create the best user experience, which is the in-fold. You open it like a book. You close it like a book. It’s much more natural than doing it the other way around, so we went for that even though it presents the harder technical challenge,” Chung said.

He further stated that though Samsung’s phone does not have a ‘perfect close’ when shut, and there are concerns that the tablet screen would be damaged, but while the Mate X can close fully, the fact that the screens are on the outside makes it prone to human errors such as accidentally calling someone, Android Authority quoted.

“Our intention is to create a perfect close, but today’s technology doesn’t allow you to fold a screen like paper, 100%. If you go with an out-fold, you can close the device fully, but then the display is on the outside, which means it’s susceptible to all kinds of user errors. You might touch it by mistake or call someone by mistake. And if you drop it, the display is more susceptible to damage,” Chung explained.

Moreover, the Samsung representative also mentioned that an in-folding design offers better batter life, yet according to a report by Bloomberg, the tech giant is working on two more foldable phones, one of which would be an out-folding one.
