KARACHI: Young Doctors Association of Sindh here on Thursday threatened to close emergency departments at all provincial hospitals in case raise in their salaries and allowances were not notified in next 24 hours.

Patients from Karachi to Kashmore are but the ultimate sufferers as are largely being denied of needed medical treatment due to forced closure of out-patient departments and at many of the hospitals even the emergency sections for past two consecutive days.

Surgical procedures at most of the government hospitals in the province had also to be canceled due to prevalent unease on the premises.

Concerned administration at different major hospitals did attempt to keep running their emergencies, however, presence of protesting doctors kept many of the patients at bay.

Dr. Wajahat Hussain Naqvi, a YDA representative talking to APP said doctors were compelled to re-stage their protest as commitment made by the government was not honored even after the passage of 15 days.

"We resorted to strike in January as authorities appeared to be indifferent towards our plight," he said mentioning that in view of patients' predicament and assurance by provincial health minister strike was called off.

It was alleged that delaying tactics were being adopted by the provincial health department compelling doctors to resume with their protest.

Claiming that closure of different departments and staging protest was an extreme measure, that YDA and its members had to adopt, Dr. Naqvi said the protesters have no where stopped the senior doctors, nursing staff or paramedics to attend the patients.

In reply to a question, he said YDA members have not closed emergency section, during past two days, in any of the hospital. "We really want the issue to be amicably settled," he said.
