The US Acting Assistant Secretary, Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, Alice Wells has said that India has neither consulted nor informed the United States before moving to revoke Jammu and Kashmir's special constitutional status. "Contrary to press reporting, the Indian government did not consult or inform the US government before moving to revoke Jammu and Kashmir's special constitutional status," the office of Alice Wells quoted her through a tweet.
Earlier, Indian media claimed that External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had briefed US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo about the Modi government's intentions to scrap the Article 370 and Article 35A for Jammu and Kashmir.
The reports also claimed that this was not for the first time that the US was briefed on the issue, adding that in February, two days after the Pulwama attack, Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval had also conveyed the same to his US counterpart John Bolton about the Modi government's plans to do away with the special status for Jammu and Kashmir. Alice Wells is currently in Pakistan on a five-day visit to hold talks with civil and military leadership on issues of mutual interests and sources said that the issue of Indian government's illegal actions would also be taken up with the top US diplomat during the talks.
