Higher Education Commission Pakistan has asked the Punjab government to take immediate action against the two private Universities; University of Management and Technology Lahore and Riphah University for operating illegal campuses against HEC rules and violation of university charter.
According to the letter written by HEC to Punjab government a copy of which available with Business Recorder HEC said that advertisement should be given in the papers regarding illegal campuses of these universities so that the awareness will be created among the students and parents regarding these campuses.
As per details a letter written by HEC executive director Lieutenant General Muhammad Asghar (retd) on March 28, 2019 to Governor Punjab that it is categorically stated that in the letter written on February 21, 2018 to government of Punjab that non of the ILM colleges should offer any degree program under the seal and the signature of the University of Management and Technology. Further the university was categorically directed on February 15. 2018 and November 13, 2017 not to start any unapproved degree program in any of its ILM Group of Colleges.
Since UMT Lahore is operating in sheer violation of HEC rules and regulations and its own law passed by Punjab Assembly, no such model of franchising or sub letting a campus is allowed by HEC and there is also no such provision in the charter of UMT Lahore.
Government of Punjab is therefore requested to take appropriate measures to stop the illicit practices of UMT by closing down all the illegal colleges and campuses immediately. Additionally a public alert in leading national news papers for awareness of general public.
Earlier The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has imposed a penalty of Rs5 million on the University of Management and Technology (UMT) for making false claims about its ranking and accreditation.
Similarly, in a letter written by HEC executive director Muhammad Asghar to Secretary Higher Education Punjab on April 4, 2019 to refrain Riphah University from operating un-lawful community colleges in anywhere in Punjab as degree awarded by these community colleges will not be recognized by HEC. According to letter since Riphah University in sheer violation of HEC rules and regulations is operating through third party franchising arrangements and community colleges. Therefore, government of Punjab is requested to take appropriate measures to stop the illicit practices of Riphah University by closing down all such community colleges in Punjab.
