Punjab Minister for Environment Protection Muhammad Rizwan said here on Wednesday that climate change has become a global issue as it is affecting human lives directly. The minister was speaking at an educational seminar on climate change organized under the aegis of Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE).
Rizwan said that climate change is not only affecting human health but agriculture sector as well. Due to the climate change issues, we are witnessing a decline in food production which consequently is increasing the poverty rate. "Keeping all this in mind, the federal and provincial governments have not only given priority to the climate change issue but also arranged additional funds to deal with this important issue," he added.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan, the scope of Clean and Green Programme has been extended and we are hopeful that we will be able to achieve the target of tree plantation, he said. He said the vision of Prime Minister Imran Khan, efforts of Chief Minister Usman Buzdar and vast experience of Speaker Punjab Assembly Pervaiz Elahi will help us to resolve day to day issues pertaining to the province and we are witnessing positive changes at every level. With the help of international partners, projects have been started to control the impact of environmental pollution.
"Punjab, being an agriculture province, is taking different steps to save the crops from climate change and this would also help to tackle any food shortage," he added. He stressed that in order to control environmental pollution; everyone in society must play its role and keep the surroundings clean in order to overcome the negative impacts of climate change.
"It is our responsibility to provide clean environment to the new generation. Likewise, it is also important to give awareness to the young generation regarding tree plantation", he added. The function was also addressed by different experts who highlighted the impacts of climate change on the society.
