The Chief Justice of Pakistan on Friday observed that the federal cabinet took no positive action on implementation of the judgment in Asghar Khan Case and got rid of it by making sub-committee. The chief justice remarked that the decision had been lying pending for its implementation for the last several years and government paid no heed to it.
According to media reports, the cabinet in its last meeting held on Thursday decided to leave the implementation of the Supreme Court's verdict in Asghar Khan Case to the next government. Chief Justice also expressed displeasure over absence of Attorney General Ashtar Ausaf during proceedings and directed him to appear before the court today (Sunday).
As the two-judge bench headed by the chief justice resumed hearing at the Lahore registry, a deputy attorney general stated that the federal cabinet took a positive decision towards the implementation of the Asghar Khan case's judgment. He said the attorney general would apprise about the decision himself. On May 08, the chief justice had directed the federal government to convene a meeting of the cabinet without any delay and take steps for the implementation of the judgment in Asghar Khan Case regarding distribution of millions of rupees by two former military generals among politicians to influence 1990 general election.
Late air chief Air Marshal Asghar Khan had filed a petition in the supreme court some 16 years ago seeking action against former army chief General Aslam Baig (retd), former ISI chief Lieutenant-General Asad Durrani (retd) and then president late Ghulam Ishaq Khan for distributing Rs 140 million among several politicians to ensure defeat of Benazir Bhutto in general elections of 1990.
