Three strongest PPP leaders including Ch Aitzaz Ahsan, Nadeem Afzal Chan and Qamar Zaman Kaira are yet on top of the wish list of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, said sources from among the Pakistan Peoples Party. According to these circles, the whole group of Qamar Zaman Kaira has already joined the PTI and chances of his joining are becoming bright with every passing day.
It may be noted that the PPP stalwarts like Samsam Bukhari, Raja Riaz, Firdous Ashiq Awan, Ghazanfar Gull and Gondal brothers have joined PTI in Punjab. Especially, joining of Nazar Gondal, the former federal minister, is a big blow to the PPP. It appears that the PPP is losing its support both in terms of electables and party workers fast and problems for the party old guards like Yusuf Raza Gilani, Qamar Zaman Kaira, Nadeem Afzal Chan and Aitzaz Ahsan are multiplying with every passing day, said Dr Hassan Askari Rizvi.
Meanwhile, strong rumours are circulating within party circles that a few more party bigwigs are in contact with Qureshi and Tareen and are set to join PTI soon after Eid. The political pundits believe that Imran Khan is depending upon Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Jehangir Khan Tareen and Aleem Khan for his search for electables in Punjab. They said there is very little space to perform for Ch Muhammad Sarwar, Ejaz Ch and Mehmood-ur-Rasheed. But still, they believe that Ch Muhammad Sarwar can be more effective in winning loyalties of electables in Punjab.
Despite criticism from the opponents, many supports of Imran Khan believe that the Sharifs' politics can only be defeated by accepting electables from all across the board. We can only bring change to the system once we are in power, said one PTI leader.
He said that Benazir Bhutto was not able to damage the popularity of Nawaz Sharif because of the fact Nawaz Sharif was enjoying support of establishment. Therefore, she was a total failure in Punjab where the Sharifs have focused on infrastructure development. Despite attracting criticism, the projects like motorways and metros have allured a large number of voters at the end of the day, said another political analyst.
He believes that Imran Khan has the ability of disturbing the position of Sharifs in Punjab. He can create upsets in the upcoming elections because of his ever-rising popularity, especially amongst the new voters, including youngsters and families. He has even attracted those families who were alien to the electoral process before 2013. Downfall of PPP politics after Benazir Bhutto's death, he has consolidated his political position in Punjab out of his strong public perception of Mr Clean. He is the only ray of hope against Nawaz Sharif, they added.
