Teams of the Punjab Food Authority have carried out a series of surprise swoops at canteens of various city hospitals and sealed and heavily fined most of them. Operations Director Ayesha Mumtaz who led the teams said on Wednesday that the General Hospital's canteen was sealed after being charged with having a poor service and selling expired soft drinks. The canteen of the Ghurki Hospital, located near Jallo More, too was sealed because of poor cleanliness followed by the closure of that of the Ganga Ram Hospital because the latter sold substandard milk and juices. The Sheikh Zaid Hospital's canteen also aced the same fate.
The canteens facing heavy fines were those of the Shalimar, Kot Khawaja Saeed, Children and Gulab Devi hospitals. In another related swoop, the authority's Ravi Town team sealed off the Irfan Kariyana Store, situated in the Akbari Mandi area, and confiscated 880 kilogram's of allegedly adulterated spices stored in a residential building. Samples were then sent to laboratories for further analysis.
