Telenor holds exhibition at Expo Centre

Telenor Pakistan on Wednesday organised an exhibition at Expo Centre to spread awareness on Internet of Things (IoT) and introduced new devices connecting gadgets remotely. Talking to newsmen at the exhibition, Deputy CEO, Telenor Pakistan, Irfan Wahab Khan said the IoT was fast spreading across the developed world.
He termed the IoT a 'mega' trend and would reach 40 billion users in next five years and its revenues were estimated to be up to $10 trillion. He said the companies installing the IoT based gadgets would earn 10 percent more than using the conventional systems.
Through machine-to-machine connectivity, he said that the Telenor Pakistan had sold 45,000 smart mainly to KE and other commercial vendors but now shifting its focus on the residential customers. He said that gadgets ranged from motorbike tracking to water heater, TV, AC, lights, refrigerator and deep freezer, ATM and a number of other household and business daily needs.
Telenor is also introducing a companion wrist watch for schoolchildren that helps parents to monitor their kids' movement and could also receive calls and messages on their smart phones in case of emergency, he said, adding that the bikes and cars would have also similar gadgets connecting to its owners remotely with a tracking facility. Wahab said the future was linked to the IoT and soon investment and infrastructure development would start to help reach the new internet based trend to each part of the country. He hoped the IoT would enhance companies' productivity. For knowing vehicles performance, there is also a device called OBD, he added.
"Talks are under way with bikes manufacturers-cum-assemblers to install tracking devices in bikes during their production,' Regional Enterprise Solutions Specialists, Farrukh Hassan Siddiqui told reporters, saying that the device cost was Rs 10, 000 at present, which may fall down in future.
He showed reporters different devices and briefed them about their functions, saying that the android phones could be a smart way for users to control their household and business gadgets and instruments remotely even staying abroad through internet apps. There is also a device for ATM to ensure a relaxed connectivity through 3G networks, he said.
He said that the wrist watch for kids named companion had a panic button permitting the children to alarm their parents in case of emergency that ensured safety to the schoolchildren and monitoring remotely. The watch can disseminate SMS and phone call and ensure a clear interaction between parents and children, besides it has geo-tracking system, he added.
