Both PML-N government and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) have profusely thanked the chief of his own faction of Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan (JUI-F), Maulana Fazlur Rahman, for his role that he played in successfully persuading both the sides to reach an amicable settlement on the issue of MQM legislators' resignations.
He truly deserves commendations for playing a highly positively role towards resolving a highly unsavory situation that MQM's resignations from Senate, National Assembly and Sindh provincial assembly had created. The other person who has played a highly positive role in this regard is Senate chairman and the architect of the 18th Constitutional Amendment Raza Rabbani. Insofar as the role of former National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq is concerned, one would be, however, a little reluctant to shower equal praise on him owing to a variety of reasons.
The present situation shows that the government has met one of the key demands of MQM: it has set up a committee comprising eminent personalities to address its genuine grievances with regard to the Karachi operation. The Sindh urban-based party is now required to play its role more responsibly in parliament strictly in accordance with its electorates' aspirations and expectations. Moreover, it is also required to provide all possible support and co-operation to the law enforcement agencies, particularly the Sindh Rangers, with a view to restoring peace in a city of teeming millions which has an unfortunate history of political and sectarian violence.
