United States (US) has expressed disappointment over the cancellation of National Security Advisor (NSA) level peace talks between Pakistan and India. US State Department spokesman, John Kirby said that on Sunday that his country was concerned that NSAs level meeting between the two countries' was called off.
The spokesman said that the meeting of Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Indian Premier Narendra Modi at the Russian city of Ufa was encouraging but such steps should continue to resolve the longstanding issues between the two neighbouring countries.
Advisor to the PM on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz was set to leave for India but the meeting was called off just before his departure as the Pakistan's Foreign Office announced that talks with India can't be held on basis of preconditions set by it.
The issue which let to cancellation of talks was the statement of Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in which she had said that she will welcome Pakistan's NSA but talks will only be on terrorism and the agenda of talks will not be expanded to other issues. On the other hand, Indian authorities were also demanding Pakistan not to hold talks with Kashmiri Hurriyat leaders who were invited at the reception at Pakistan's High Commission.
