How ironic it is that the number of Syrian refugees has topped four million. According to the United Nation, more than four million Syrians have fled the civil war ravaging their country to become refugees in the surrounding region - a million of them in the past 10 months alone.
"This is the biggest refugee population from a single conflict in a generation," UN refugee chief Antonio Guterres has been quoted as saying in a statement. The UN refugee agency has pointed out a surge in new refugee arrivals in Turkey has pushed the total number of Syrian refugees in neighbouring countries to over 4,013,000 people.
No doubt the Syria of today is in ruins. Not only is the 'Arab Spring' that was triggered by the killing of a youth in Tunisia, Bashar Asad is also responsible for the present-day plight of Syrians. He created a lot of space for al Qaeda and Islamic State through his refusal to give up power.
