Over eight people were killed and several injured in the different areas of garrison city Tuesday following heavy rainfall. The heavy rainfall started in the morning and continued throughout the day. It collapsed roofs of many houses were collapsed. Rainwater entered in houses locating in low-laying areas. In result, many houses were washed away. The water-level in Nullah Lei rose up to 20 feet spreading a wave of fear among the people specially living along the banks of Nullah Lei.
On some venues army was also called for rescue purpose. Rescue teams shifted the dead bodies of eight persons to hospital. Relief teams have started operation to search three missing dead bodies. The district government has issued flood warning to residents. All hospitals in the city have been put on high alert to deal with any untoward situation. Heavy rainfall badly affected electricity and transport system in the city. People are facing hardships. Several areas of Cantt and garrison were also affected badly during rain and the sewerage systems also got chocked.
The areas flooded by rainwater included Lane 4 and 5 and Radio Pakistan of Westridge, Misrial Road, Shalley Valley, Peoples Colony, Qasim Market, Range Road, Railway Carriage Factory, Shakrial, Nadim Colony, Mohan Pura, Fauji Colony, Badar Colony, Gawalmandi, Ganjmandi, City Saddar Road, Jorian, Soan, Adaila and many other areas. In Jaan Colony of Police Station Race Course, a little girl died when water entered her house. A big wave of water also entered in Lane 4 and 5 on Peshawar Road within limits of Westridge police station and flesh flood swept away at least five people including a girl.
Rescue 1122 spokes persons told media that Rescue 1122 recovered two dead bodies from Railway Carriage Factory while one from Peoples Colony during a rescue operation and later brought them to DHQ. Those who were recovered from Railway Carriage Factory identified as Hammad, aged 15 and Rehman, aged 18. The name of third person wearing green jeans and black shoes was yet to be determined by the police.
Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Managing Director Raja Shaukat said that Rawalpindi received 117 mm rain after which water level reached 23.22 feet at Katarian Bridge and 15.32 feet at Gawalmandi. He said that WASA has completed all the dredging process in the areas concerned. He said that WASA also set up four Flood Emergency Centers in Moti Mehal, Liaquat Bagh, Bagh Sardaran and Commercial Market to meet any kind of emergency.
