Haji Hafeez Anwar Chairman of Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) has termed the role of ministries of textile industry, commerce and finance as silent spectators and these are doing nothing to the sinking vessel of the cotton ginners who were crying with unsold stock of 2.5 million bales worth Rs 27 billion.
While talking to this scribe here on Wednesday, he warned that PCGA would react sharply and it would not sit silent if ginner community was pushed towards an alley and it would go on strike besides suspension of purchase of raw cotton (Phutti) from the ginners.
The chairman said, "We are fighting battle for our survival and we are not ready to trust on the assurances of the government. He expressed his concern on the attitude of the present government and said it did nothing to withdraw 5 percent sales tax on oil-cake. Trading Corporation of Pakistan was using delaying tactics and it did not purchase even a single bale of cotton from the ginners in spite of elapsing two months, he maintained.
He said that sampling of cotton had already been completed two weeks ago but it did not sign any agreement for procurement of cotton. Haji Hafeez Anwar said, "I have been contacting the ginners of Sindh and Punjab daily to discuss the arising situation and we would go on strike anytime soon". He said that since the government has announced the purchase of one million bales, the ginners had purchased the raw cotton on higher rates than the market .Now they are unable to pay the dues of the farmers. The Chairman said that ginners would be among the protestors if the farmers came on the roads.
