All Pakistan Bedsheet & Upholstery Manufacturers Association (APBUMA)'s chairman Khawaja Jalal-uddin Roomi has urged the Government to approve the Textile Policy 2014-19 at earliest to achieve the targets of exports and strengthening the country's economy. In his statement, Roomi said that there is a huge demand of Pakistani products in North and south America, European union states and other countries but importers are reluctant to visit Pakistan due to growing incidents of terrorism and law and order situation in the country.
Pakistani exporters are forced to visit abroad for business meetings, consequently our cost of production increases. Though Pakistan had attained the GSP-plus status but yet it is unable to avail this facility due to energy crisis and prevailing political situation in the country. When manufacturers utilise other resources/means, the cost of production further increases and importers refuse to accept the costly products.
Jalaluddin Roomi expressed fear that we would lose the world market if our products would be uncompetitive and costly. Chairman of APBUMA said that all stake holders of cotton/textiles were waiting for Textile Policy curiously which may grant some incentives and concessions to the manufacturers and exporters. Roomi said that it is commendable that Federal Finance Minister has asked the Secretary Ministry of textile industry to submit a draft of Textile Policy before the Economic Co-ordination Committee (ECC) in next meeting.
Roomi said that exporter's claims, worth billions of rupees, against sales tax refunds, draw backs on local taxes and levies, are not paid so far, whereas it was assured by the Chairman of FBR and Federal Finance Minister to settle the cases at earlier. He suggested that a high level meeting of all trade associations be convened under the chairman of Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif to save the Textile sector from destruction.
