ISLAMABAD: The Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) for the week ended April 7, 2022 recorded an increase of 1.53 percent mainly due to increase in the prices of food items including tomatoes (52.75 percent), onions (27.34 percent), bananas (12.24 percent), garlic (2.80 percent), beef (2.74 percent), mutton (2.70 percent), cooking oil 5 litre (2.29 percent), salt powdered (1.70 percent), and vegetable ghee 1kg (1.35 percent), and non-food item LPG (2.14 percent), says the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

The year-on-year trend depicts an increase of 17.87 percent mainly due to increase in prices of tomatoes (223.16 percent), onions (82.21 percent), LPG (79.21 percent), garlic (76.45 percent), cooking oil 5 litre (57.86 percent), vegetable ghee 2.5kg (57.67 percent), mustard oil (57.55 percent), vegetable ghee 1kg (56.88 percent), washing soap (39.60 percent), masoor (38.47 percent), petrol (35.25 percent), bananas (28.07 percent), and diesel (27 percent) while major decrease observed in the prices of chillies powdered (39.50 percent), moong (28.61 percent), eggs (22.39 percent), potatoes (13.38 percent), and sugar (11.45 percent).

According to the latest data, the SPI went up from 171.82 percent during the week ended March 31, 2022 to 174.45 percent during the week under review.

The SPI for the consumption groups up to Rs 17,732 and Rs 17,733 to Rs 22,888, Rs 22,889 to Rs 29,517 and Rs 29,518 to Rs 44,175 and for above Rs 44,175 increased by 1.85 percent, 1.83 percent, 1.65 percent, 1.60 percent and 1.39 percent respectively.

During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 22 (43.14 percent) items increased, eight (15.68 percent) items decreased and 21 (41.18 percent) items remained stable, said the PBS in weekly SPI data.

The commodities, which recorded increase in their average prices included tomatoes (52.75 percent), onions (27.34 percent), bananas (12.24 percent), garlic (2.80 percent), beef with bone (2.74 percent), mutton (2.70 percent), cooking oil Dalda or other similar brand (sn), 5 litre tin each (2.29 percent), LPG (2.14 percent), salt powdered (1.70 percent), vegetable ghee Dalda/Habib or other superior quality 1kg pouch each (1.35 percent), vegetable ghee Dalda/Habib 2.5kg tin each (0.96 percent), lawn printed Gul Ahmed/Al Karam (0.68 percent), powdered milk Nido 390 gm polybag each (0.46 percent), eggs (0.41 percent), Sufi washing soap (0.36 percent), pulse gram (0.33 percent), masoor (0.33 percent), firewood whole 40kg (0.29 percent), tea Lipton Yellow Label (0.23 percent), mustard oil (0.23 percent), milk fresh (0.21 percent), and energy saver (0.19 percent).

The commodities, which recorded decrease in their prices during the period under review included chilies powder National (3.29 percent), chicken (2.92 percent), potatoes (0.91 percent), wheat flour bag 20kg (0.68 percent), gur (0.54 percent), maash (0.33 percent), sugar (0.09 percent), and moong (0.01 percent).

The commodities whose prices remained unchanged during the period included rice basmati broken, rice irri-6/9 (Sindh/Punjab), bread plain (small size), curd, cooked beef, cooked daal, tea prepared, cigarettes Capstan, long cloth 57” Gul Ahmed/Al Karam, shirting, Georgette, gents sandal Bata pair, gents sponge slippers pair Bata, ladies sandal pair Bata, electricity charges, gas charges, match box, petrol super, hi-speed diesel, telephone call charges, and toilet soap.
