KARACHI: A massive fire erupted in multi-storey building of the Queen Victoria Shopping Centre near Zainab Market here on Wednesday. The cause of fire and consequent damage to the properties were not immediately ascertained. However, no loss of life was reported, according to the police and rescue sources.

Following the incident, fire brigade, rescue teams and contingents of law enforcement agencies rushed to the site to douse the fire. The shopping centre was immediately evacuated by rescue teams and road leading it was closed for traffic.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah took notice of the inferno and sought a comprehensive report on it.

Fire breaks out at Karachi's Victoria Market

Administrator Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab said that inquiry would be conducted to ascertain the reason of fire, so that such incidents could be avoided in the future. He said that fire tenders were rushed soon after receiving the information. The fire was erupted at fifth floor of Victoria Market and to extinguish the same, five fire tenders and a snorkel were utilized.

Barrister Murtaza Wahab said to protect lives and properties of the citizens is the prime responsibility of the government and it was taking every possible effort in this regard. The Administrator said that fire eruption in Victoria Market is deplorable as a same incident was taken place in nearby Cooperative Market Saddar a few days back.

He said that the government wanted to ensure advanced measures to protect markets from fires Metropolitan Commissioner Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Afzal Zaidi also visited the oria Market to inspect rescue and relief. Fire officers of KMC’s fire brigade briefed him about level of the fire.He said that fire brigades vehicles were rushed soon after receiving the information. On November 15, the number of shops gutted in the Saddar Cooperative Market fire, and traders claimed a loss worth around Rs10 billion as hundreds of shops were gutted in that inferno.
