Formation of 'interim political set-up' in Kabul necessary to meet Afghans urgent needs: FO

  • Foreign Office says the govt of Pakistan would continue to do its best to help Afghan brethren during the prevalent challenging environment

Pakistan’s Foreign Office (FO) said on Wednesday that the announcement about the formation of an interim political set-up in Kabul would "address the requirement of a governance structure to meet the urgent needs of the people of Afghanistan."

The remarks come as the Taliban announced veteran Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund as the leader of their new government while giving key positions to some of the movement's top officials on Tuesday.

"We hope that the new political dispensation will ensure coordinated efforts for peace, security and stability in Afghanistan as well as work towards taking care of humanitarian and development needs of the Afghan people," the FO said in a statement.

'Changed reality in Afghanistan': FM Qureshi calls for 'pragmatic approach'

The FO reiterated that Pakistan stands by its "abiding commitment" to a peaceful, stable, sovereign, and prosperous Afghanistan.

Earlier today, the government of Pakistan decided to dispatch humanitarian assistance comprising food and medicines for the people of Afghanistan. "Three C-130s are being dispatched to Afghanistan. After the first immediate tranche through the air, further supplies would continue through land routes," FO said in a statement.

The FO further noted that the government of Pakistan would continue to do its best to help Afghan brethren during the prevalent challenging environment.

"Pakistan also urges the international community to play its role in helping the people of Afghanistan to avert a possible humanitarian crisis," it added.

Governance structures in Afghanistan: Experts call for effective UN role

Earlier in the day, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said the world is now grappling with a changed reality in Afghanistan, adding that the new situation requires discarding old lenses, developing new insights, and proceeding with a realistic and pragmatic approach.

"We must stress that Afghan issues should have Afghan solutions. We must make clear that Afghan soil should not be allowed to be used against any country," the FM said.
