KARACHI: Economic & Financial Analyst, Ateeq Ur Rehman has emphasised that the government while considering simplifying the exports of furniture items whether traditional or modern must significantly accommodate the exporters by undemanding paper junks as documentation.
The consideration for key trends and prospects in the real sense of one window dealing is requested.
The manufacturing of furniture items and its exports are the astounding value additions. They should not only to be categorised as SMEs but also the cottage industry. Therefore they are to be encouraged for growth by imposing no taxes and duties on the import of the raw material imported by them for manufacturing of modern furniture. Organisation into furniture business should be benched marked for taxation by FBR on turnover and not on area of display, he said.
He added that export of furniture essentially needs proficient handling at sea port and container yards especially during loading, unloading and again reloading in containers. The professional packing and stacking is dire important.
He noted that there are problems for furniture exporters at customs and examinations, sometimes the furniture is being drilled by drilling machines at port, too. And during reloading by untrained and ordinary labourers damages the whole consignment. Alternate arrangements saving the sanctity of the delicate exportable items have to be essentially worked out.
Furniture shops and workshops are not Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCGs) and should not be treated as TIER -1- Retailers, therefore serving notices by tax authorities is unjust and not practicable for this trade.
