Taiwan stocks up

Taiwan stocks ended up 0.81 percent on Tuesday, rallying from a six-week closing low in the previous session, led by tourism shares such as Grand Formosa Regent on hopes for better ties with China. The main TAIEX share index climbed 70.56 points to 8,778.39 in cautious trading, following a week of losses that saw the index sink to its lowest in six weeks.
The tourism sub-index shot up 5.2 percent as the head of Taiwan's ruling party visited China to mend relations with the mainland. Leading hotel chain Grand Formosa Regent jumped 4.89 percent and Ambassador Hotel shot up 6.28 percent.
The heavily-weighted electronics sub-index was up 0.87 percent, as the island's top chip design house Mediatek bounced 3.9 percent, taking back some of the 12 percent lost in the past six sessions, during which time the broader market fell 5.3 percent.
