Munir Ahmad Khan, a spokesman of the Alliance for Restoration of Democracy (ARD) addressing a press conference here on Thursday, has rejected the notion that present parliament was in a position to elect President Pervez Musharraf for another term.
Stating that article 48(2) of the Constitution of the Country forbids a person from being elected as president for the third term. He put forth that President Pervez for the first time became president after ousting President Rafiq Tarar in June 2001.
He said tenure of president accordingly would end in June 2006. He pointed that as per 17th amendment, Musharraf took oath as president on November 16, 2002. He giving his views on Charter of Democracy signed between leaders of two political parties PPPP and PML-N in London recently said that criticism on it from government quarters was unfounded as government it appeared had even not bothered to read the substance of it and had embarked upon censure just for the heck of it, he said.
He said the Charter that was highly hailed by foreign media, would be a step towards establishing true democracy in the country.
