Bankers Skills Development Centre, established by Dr Ahsan H. Khan, a senior banker and former chief executive and director of UBL Assets Management Co, organised a seminar, "Interest-free Banking - from Concept to Action, at a local hotel in association with M.A. Jinnah University.
It was inaugurated by Zahid Hussain, ambassador of Pakistan in Kenya. The chief guest at the seminar was Aqeel A. Al-Jassem, Secretary General, Islamic Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The technical session was chaired by Liaquat Durrani, managing director, State Bank of Pakistan Banking Corporation.
A large number of bankers and delegates from different corporation attended. Eminent speakers included Zaigham Mehmood Rizvi, chairman, House Building Finance Corporation; Najmul Hasan, general manager Meezan Bank; Mahmood Shafqat Mufti from the State Bank and Shariah advisors of Muslim Commercial Bank and Al-Barka International Bank. Professor Dr Abdul Wahab, president M.A. Jinnah University, welcomed Aqeel Al-Jassem and Zahid Hussain, whose services to the cause of education were eulogised.
In his presentation, Dr Ahsan H Khan, former advisor Islamic Banking UBL, emphasised upon Islamic banks the need to introduce market-friendly competitive and innovative products and services.
Special awards of recognition were given by the chief guest to Zafar Aziz Usmani of Habib Bank and Dr Mirza Abrar Baig, chief HR National Bank of Pakistan, for their marvellous services to education and human resources development. Shujat Ali Baig was given the award for excellent promotion of media in Pakistan and Sultan Ahmad for his meritorious services for promoting independent financial/economic journalism.
