A two-day Pak-Japan economic policy dialogue was held in Tokyo from July 21. Pakistan' side comprised adviser to the finance ministry, Dr Ashfaque Hasan Khan, secretary Economic Affairs Division (EAD) Khalid Saeed and Pakistan's ambassador to Japan Kamran Niaz. The Government of Japan was represented by deputy foreign minister at the forum.
Sources said the member of Pakistan's delegation gave a detailed presentation at the forum on its economic achievements during the last few years. The presentation covered key areas of the country's economy.
The forum was told that Pakistan achieved 8.4 percent economic growth in 2004-05 that helped it made big stride on economic front to get a driving seat as regional player.
Pakistan would take a number of steps to maintain this pace of economic growth during the next one decade, the forum was apprised.
The delegation listed a number of areas, which helped Pakistan become a fast growing economy in the last fiscal year. Some of these were IT, Communications, Housing and Construction, Agriculture and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
Pakistan side informed the forum about its future plan of action for economic development, which is based on three fundamentals; liberalisation of economy, privatisation of public sector entities to off-load continuous burden on national economy and reforms in key sectors of the economy.
Pak-Japan economic policy dialogue is a high-level forum for exchange of views on economic policy-making. The policy makers meet annually at the forum to discuss economic achievements of the two countries, besides taking each other's ideas for their mutual benefit.
