The Senate on Tuesday debated on the law and order situation in the country and the incidents of terrorism at Bari Imam and Karachi, which killed a number of people. Professor Ghafoor Ahmed of the Jamaat-i-Islami regretted the killing of one of their leaders in Karachi Aslam Mujahid and said he spent his entire life in the service of Islam and poor people. He said Aslam provided jobs to the poor and money to the needy so that they could start small businesses.
While demanding arrest of the killers, he said, the law and order situation in Karachi was unsatisfactory. He also demanded setting up of a judicial commission to probe into the incidents of terrorism.
Ilyas Ahmed Bilour of ANP said whenever a terrorist act takes place the government always claimed that the killers would be arrested, but they are never caught.
He alleged that due to law and order situation in Sindh, the industry is shifting to Punjab. Bilour said the government should take steps to improve the law and order situation in the country.
Nighat Agha of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) while narrating the details of Karachi incident, said, it is perhaps for the first time in the history of Pakistan that a suicide bomb attack attempt was foiled by a brave policeman who was killed.
She said the investment was coming into Sindh.
Maulana Gul Nasib Khan of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) said that Pakistan is an Islamic country and according to the Islamic teachings, peace is not possible without providing justice to the people.
He said the people should be given a sense of self-respect and provided justice to stop occurrence of the terrorist acts in the country. The incidents of Karachi and Bari Imam, he added, gave the impression that there is no law in the country.
Sanaullah Baloch of Baloch Nationalist Party (BNP) said people today are afraid to go to places of worship.
He stressed the need to improve the economic condition of the country and its poor people.
Abida Saif of the MQM condemned the killings in Karachi and said that it was an attempt to sabotage the economic activity in the metropolis and to stop holding of local government elections.
She said all the political parties should help the Sindh government in controlling the law and order in Karachi.
She demanded the government to arrest the killers and award them exemplary punishment.
Syed Hidayatullah Shah of the MMA said the law-enforcement agencies have failed to curb the incidents of terrorism.
He said Pakistan came into existence in the name of Islam and Islamic laws should be enforced in the country.
Raza Muhammad Raza of Pakhtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party (PKMAP) said that nobody was safe from terrorism.
Dr Muhammad Ismail Buledi said the government must admit that it has not been able to maintain law and order in the country.
Participating in the debate, Local Bodies and Rural Development Minister Abdul Razzak Thahim said he condemns the recent terrorist incidents in the country.
He called upon the opposition to support the government in improving the law and order situation.
