An Anti-Terrorism Court in Karachi indicted seven persons in the explosive substance and police encounter case. Nazeer alias Balla, Iftekhar, Khalilur Rehman, Sajjad Ahmed, Fareed, Mohammad Ali and Babar, said to be members of Rehman Dakait gang, pleaded not guilty and claimed trial when charge sheet was read out by the court. These men had assembled in a factory premises in Kalakot area of Lyari for extorting money from a businessman.
They were arrested by police after a shootout on January 3, 2005. In the said encounter, Shahnawaz alias Shani, a close associate of Rehman Dakait, was killed while Nazeer Balla was injured. Seven TT pistols, grenades, a kalashnikov, and ammunition were recovered from the accused.
Two policemen, including SHO Kalakot Shaukat Ali Shahani and Head Constable Manzoor Hasan were also wounds in the said encounter. ATC Judge Arshad Noor Khan, after indictment, fixed May 28, 2005, for next hearing.
