Sui Southern Gas Company has taken strong notice of the fact, that digging of trenches and roads during the development work undertaken by certain civic agencies and organisations, in different parts of the Karachi, is causing damage to gas pipelines. According to company's spokesman, the company understands that such organisations are keen to complete their projects on a fast-track basis before the end of the current fiscal year, but it stresses on necessary precaution and care by these agencies.
In the last four days, the company has recorded 9 cases in different parts of the city, including Landhi, Korangi, Malir, Saudabad, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Manzoor Colony and Stadium Road, where such digging has resulted in damage to pipelines and disruption of gas supplies as well as caused serious injuries to people and in one case resulting in the death of a company's maintenance department employee.
The company has pointed out that such agencies are using heavy-duty mechanical excavators indiscriminately in the city which was causing serious damage to pipelines and cables laid underground by other utility companies along roads and in residential as well as business areas.
The SSGC has taken up the matter with the concerned authorities and civic agencies and cautioned them against the use of trenching equipment and mechanical excavators by their contractors, without informing the company first.
The company spokesman said that SSGC was willing to provide any assistance required by such contractors but could not allow such irresponsible action during the construction work that causes inconvenience to its customers in the form of disruption of gas supply or endangering human life.
The spokesman said, "It is in the best interest of all such organisations and the residents of Karachi that required precautions be taken during such civil works."
